The gap is a design problem, not a device problem.
The average mobile conversion rate is 1.82%. Desktop is 3.14%. That's a 42% gap, and it exists on almost every website.
But here's what most people get wrong about this number: the gap isn't because mobile users have less intent. Mobile users are searching, clicking, and visiting with the same purpose as desktop users. The gap exists because most websites deliver a significantly worse experience on mobile.
Why mobile converts less
The typical small business website was designed on a desktop. The designer looked at it on a large screen, approved the layout, and then the site "responded" to smaller screens by stacking everything into a single column and shrinking the text.
That's not mobile design. That's desktop design with a compression algorithm applied.
Buttons too close together. Forms with too many fields. Text requiring zoom. Slow images on cellular. Menus needing precise tapping. Every friction point is a lost conversion.
Large tap targets. Simplified forms. Fast images. One-thumb navigation. Critical actions within 2 taps. The experience is built for how people actually use their phones.
Real mobile design accounts for how people actually use phones: they're scrolling with their thumb, they're often on cellular connections, they're multitasking, and they have zero patience for friction. Elements that work on desktop don't automatically work on mobile.
The conversion gap by load time

The mobile-first approach
Mobile-first design flips the process. Instead of designing for desktop and then adapting for mobile, you design for the smallest screen first and then scale up.
This forces every design decision through the tightest constraint. If a form works on a phone, it definitely works on a desktop. If a button is easy to tap with a thumb, it's definitely easy to click with a mouse. If a page loads fast on a 4G connection, it's definitely fast on broadband.
What to check on your own site
Open your website on your phone right now. Try to complete the action you want your customers to take. If that's filling out a contact form, fill it out. If it's finding your phone number, find it.
If any of those steps feel frustrating, your mobile visitors feel the same frustration. And 53% of them leave before giving you a second chance.
Every website we build at Sonder Digital is designed mobile-first. The phone experience is the primary design, tested on real devices before anything else. Because that's where your customers are.
